Finished All Books

Now that I have read three more books about the different musicians that inspire me from a day to day basis, I feel as though I have really learned a lot about what makes a great musician. Each of these musicians talked about a lot of different aspects to their lives and the music scene that they pulled from and used in order to achieve success. The most common threads between all three musicians was location, persistence and determination. Stevie Ray showed location and persistence the most out of the three traits. He showed these through constant gigging. When comparing Stevie to Coltrane and Wonder, he definitely out gigged all of them in his early career. When Coltrane gigged in his early career, there was a definite gain in popularity and the ability for him to gain more success in the music industry. As for Stevie Ray, a lot of his early gigs were just at restaurants and bars near his house. Thought these gigs he expanded his love for music and gave him a lot of experience with playing with a band. Later on, location proved to be a huge factor as Stevie met Albert King and soon began to pull from these amazing musicians on his music scene.

Coltrane largely showed persistence and determination with his practice regime. From an early age, Coltrane was obsessed with constant obsessive practicing. He always wanted to gain new material and have different unique things to play. This was something that the two Stevie's did not necessarily strive for. This constant obsession for a new sound and the ability to play anything largely contributed to Coltrane success because it allowed for him to surpass all other musicians around him and stand out, making him a larger target for people like Miles Davis to pick him up and have them be part of their band. This also allowed for them to become long lasting musicians in the music community, even after their death. People still listen to Coltrane just because of how technically talented and how unique he was.

When it comes to Stevie Wonder, Wonder showed persistence with his social rights speech through all of his music. I think that with Stevie Wonder, his music was all about self expression. If Wonders self expression had gained him dis popularity, then he would have continued in that path. This caused his music to be extremely organic and authentic to himself. I always find it interesting when I listen to musicians who play music that they think people want to hear vs. what they actually want to play. You can really hear the lack of connection in the music when they do not want to be playing a certain piece.

  1. My comment on your quote blog is good for this one, too. But you sound a little bit like you're done reading for the quarter, though you have a week left. So start a new book and read at least a hundred pages in it, please.
